Route 53 stretch will be widened to five lanes

South Shore commuters who drive on Route 53 in Hanover will soon notice a difference.

The Route 53 widening project has commenced and construction should begin in a week or two.

“They’re actually staking things out right now,” Town Planner Andrew Port said on Monday. Port said the company, Paolini Corporation, was to meet with utility companies this week to discuss the project.

The plan is to expand a one-mile stretch of Route 53 from Pond Street to Mill Street from two to five lanes. Two lanes of traffic will be traveling in either direction, and there will be a shared turning lane in the middle. Port said he expects the project to be completed by Oct. 1. The project received final approval for state funding last fall.

Businesses along the stretch will stay open during construction. The road will also remain open, though travelers can expect some delays.

Port said the project was undertaken primarily to solve traffic volume issues and also to make the area more attractive to businesses. Port said the town of Hanover saw land viable for commercial development and wanted to make sure the road could handle the traffic.

He said the Target project the planning board approved last week, wouldn’t have come to town without improvements made through this road project. Construction on the new Target, to be built in the area of the former Decathlon Sports, is expected to begin in May.

If residents have any questions or concerns about the project, they can call the town planning office at (781) 826-7641. To see a map and drawing of the project, check out www.hanover-ma.gov/route-53-project.shtml.
